Friend

I consider a good friend as another sibling in the family, you treat them as if they were your own brother or sister. But not as mean, or maybe...

A good friend... A good friend is someone who will always stay by your side and never leave it. They will encourage you whenever you are feeling down and help you to face the scary things in life. A good friend is a someone who will laugh at your jokes even if they are not funny, someone who will backstab you, but backstab positive things about you.

When you have a good friend, It’s not only her/him in the picture. You are a good friend too, so you have to play your part. Help them out whenever they’re feeling down, be empathetic and understand their feelings. To be a good friend, show how much you care for them.

It’s important to have good friends, do you reckon? But sometimes throughout life, you will have ups and downs. When you are having this situation, its good to apologize. Just pick up the broken pieces and put them back jointly.

Picking the right friends is really hard. A good friend is not the person who has been there for you the longest, a good friend is someone who came and never left your side. Make the right decisions.

Future Aspiration

This morning we had a few visitors. Some we have already met, some we haven’t and an old friend. We learnt that sometimes at our age we don’t have any idea about what we want to do in life. So we need to start trying and be opportunity hungry.

Opportunity hungry means, go hard in everything. For example if their was a trial for soccer and you straight away thought to yourself, no way I suck at that. You never know, you could trial and find out you were the man at it.

Our old friend Anthony Samuels gave us a good speech about his experience in life. He was talking about keys to unlock the phrases. One of the phrases were “To miharo hoki” which means “you are amazing.” There was also another phrase that said “your past doesn’t have to determine your future.” So don’t let anything embarrassing or something bad in the past affect your future.

There was also a lovely lady who we haven’t met before, Amelia Unufe. She has just finished her second year at A.U.T and now working towards her degree. Amelia has been studding fashion for both those years.

Paula, omg he was so funny, not only funny, but inspiring as well. His speech was my favourite. Well back in intermediate he use to love swimming, he was in the highest group. Paula was one of the tallest kids, so tall that he could touch the floor of the swimming pool. No other person in the school could do that. When they would have swimming races he would always win. In the middle of a race, about half way everyone would always get tired even him. But using his long legs, he would just put his legs down, run with his legs and stroke with his arms. The teachers knew that he was so good and talented that he should go and verse other competitive students from other places, not knowing he was a cheater. The day came and they went to a very flash swimming place. He went and got changed into his togs then threw his bag onto the bleaches. As soon as he got called for his race, he was so excited. The only thing he was thinking about was winning. So the race came. He stood there with the competitors waiting for the wooden blocks to clap. “Clap” He dived in. Swimming so fast, he got about halfway, looked up and saw that the other swimmers were getting tired and slowing down. He put his feet down towards the floor... But there was no floor. He noticed that the pool was deeper than the pool at his school. He figured out a new swimming skill that was called drowning. The lifeguard dived in and took him out safely. All his friends were laughing at him. They took all the laughter back to school and soon the whole school was laughing at him. He was so embarrassed, but that was all in the past. He wouldn’t let his past affect his future where he is now. Paula is now a organisation attitude, he goes around schools, talking about bullying. Well I would call him a Social worker.

So yeah, remember not to let your past determine your future. “To Miharo Hoki!” “( You Are Amazing!)” Most important thing, be opportunity hungry! Go hard! Live the fullest.

Article

In Washington last Sunday which was the 23.11.14. Early in the morning police in the US city of Cleveland shot and killed a 12-year-old boy who was in a playground waving around what turned out to be a replica gun. They shot him twice and and hit him in the stomach at least once, after reports about him pointing guns at everyone.

The reports that were made were saying that it was probably a fake gun, but he was pointing and waving it at everyone. But either way the policies had to do something.

I think it was stupid for the boy to do these kind of things. Even though he knew that the police had guns, i reckon he should have put his fake gun down. He was scaring the people around him, maybe even scaring them to death.

At the same time, the police could have stop and thought about their actions. The boy was only 12 years old and probably had special needs. Plus if he was crazy and had a gun, i think its more likely for him to shoot someone instead of waving it around and pointing it at people.

Rip Currents

Imagine swimming alone in the ocean and you find yourself getting pulled out by the sea? Well the first thing you do is not panic and just go with it. I mean “it” as in a rip. It’s important to keep yourself safe at the surf beach, you need to know all about rips.

To avoid a rip, make sure you are swimming between the yellow and red flags because it is the safest area to swim. You also need to stay calm and let the rip take you out. Also keep an eye out on the water in case of any changes.

If you see discolored water, you should probably stay away from it. Stay clear from any calm water, there's likely to be a rip nearby. It’s important to know how to identify rips.

If you are caught in a rip, the best thing to do is to not panic. Raise your hand and reach for the stars. Once you escape from the rip, you swim to the sides and catch the waves back to shore.

So this is some tips how to avoid a rip, identify a rip and react to a rip. It’s really important to know about these things in case you somehow in the future get into this situation, or you could help someone else. So many lifeguards risk their  lives saving people, you could change that by looking after yourself and others in the water.

Explanation-Empathy

Take a second and imagine everyone in the world showing empathy, It would be a safe and a better place to live in, wouldn't it be? Empathy is about standing in someone else’s shoes and understanding their feelings. For example, if someone was feeling down or hurt, put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel?

I think the best way to show empathy is to be respectful, help them out with their situation. Just remember that everyone has feelings, don't just think about yourself. Show empathy by understanding their feelings. Make sure their feeling safe or even ask them if they need any help.

Don’t you want to live in a world full of empathetic people? Think about your family members not having to take the risk of going off to war, no wars, no fighting. Think about schools with no bullies, Just think about these small things we can change. It’s all upto you. Empathy is very important, not only is empathy important when someone is feeling sad, also when you are feeling sad.

Normally empathy underestimated. We should all encourage every single kid about understanding the mind of maturity to become empathetic, so that they can express their joy, pain and find out their abilities to tackle situations in the future. I am pretty sure we all have a little bit of empathy in us, this would change the world.

Immersion Assembly

This morning was such a surprise, especially when we found out what our theme for this term was... ART ATTACK!  Not that I’m any good at the subject. Well, in assembly this morning each team had to put on a performance and it had to be about what they were learning about this term. I really enjoyed team 4 and 5’s performance, I was fascinated.

Team 4 performed a short play about an art competition. There were about 6 contestants in the competition holding a piece of their own art work. They all acted out as famous artists. All the actors would have to tell some things about themselves. The judge would walk to one contestant and then we would have to clap if we liked their artwork, the artist that got the loudest applause is the winner. The winner is Pablo Picasso

My favourite performance was team 5’s of course. There was a bit of confusion in their performance for me. They all started painting mad and fast on a big piece of blank paper as they got onto the stage. I was sitting there as if I was dumb trying to figure out what they were painting. Maybe it was just me being impatient, because they turned the paper upside down and it turned out that they painted some of our teachers faces upside down, so im guessing the paper was already upside down? Anyways, it was such a beautiful piece of artwork, if the people they painted stood next to the painting, you wouldn’t be able to tell a difference.

It was a really good immersion assembly, I enjoyed it. I cant wait to get my paintbrush dipped into all the colourful colours and start being creative, not that i'm any good at it like I said in the beginning. But yeah I like our theme for term 4, it seems very inventive.

Tchoukball - Research game

The game Tchoukball is from Switzerand and it was created by Hermann Brandt in 1970. The game was created because Hermann thought that sports should not just be used to form champions but to just be creative and create a more humane society. Hermann is also an artist and now lives in Canada.

It is still played today, there is a main competition called World Tchoukball Championship. Tchoukball is popular in some countries but not so much in others. There are many competitions for Tchoukball. Though the game was created in Switzerland, there are competitions all over the world.  There is the European World Cup, Asian World Cup, South American World Cup and the Tchoukball World Cup Championship.

Each team is allowed to score on both sides of the field. In the game you are allowed to have 12 players on each team, of which seven may be on the court at any one time. To score a point you have to be an attacking player and it has to bounce off the frame, (The frame is similar to a trampoline) and land outside the D without getting caught by the defence team. Believe it or not, defenders are not allowed to intercept any passes from the attack team. You are only allowed to take three steps and you are not allowed to make more than three passes before you shoot at the frame.

Rimu- Adding More Detail

Twisting and turning on the bed, he got tangled in his sheets. Something was bugging him, it was another one of those lazy mornings. All of a sudden Rimu heard a strong deep voice shouting his name. He turned to the window as he heard tapping coming from that direction, he could barely open his eyes. Rimu still felt a bit drowsy, you could tell by his heavy eyes. He couldn’t make out why he could hear his name. Obviously it can’t be hail because it was clearly in the middle of summer. He dragged himself out of bed, and looked. He could just make out a figure, which leant forward and rapped again, with more power in his voice this time.
“Rimu! You deadhead. Wake up!”
Rimu groaned. Ollie! He would have preferred hail.

Kabaddi

The game Kabaddi was invented 4000 years ago in early India. The name Kabaddi is from the word Kar-badhi which means “holding hands” That’s where they got the name because you hold hands when you are defending. There are different kinds of Kabaddi - Sanjeevani, Gaminee and Amar.If you didn’t know, the game is still played today. There competitions all over the world that lots of countries compete in. A few are Asia Kabaddi Cup, UK Kabaddi Cup and Kabaddi World Cup

It is played by 7 players on each team, there are 4 defenders, 1 raider and the rest just rotate around. The purpose of the game is to get as many points as you can. The defenders have to stay inside the rectangle and stay linked together and the raider has to go through the gateway. Their main purpose is for the raider to go through the gateway and there, they have 30 seconds to tag a defender on the other team then the defender that has been tug has to try and tackle the raider to the ground and hold them down till the 30 seconds is up. The raider and still try and get up and get their whole body through the gateway. You only need cones for the outline and a markway for the gateway. Whoever has the most points at the end wins. You can earn points by the raider getting back to their own team or if the defender holds the raider down.
Kabaddi is a really interesting name and its really unique  just like the game. So yeah the game is pretty simple aye, but its really fun to play. It seems to be popular all around the world, you should probably play it sometime.

Ki-O-Rahi

Ki-O-Rahi is a traditional Maori game that is popular all over New Zealand and is also known in other countries, mainly Europe, France. The game was created in The Legend of Rahi and Patupaiarehe where Rahi’s wife, Patupaiarehe was abducted and taken far away. Rahi had to find her and when he did, Rahi’s tribe and the tribe that abducted Patupaiarehe created Ki-O-Rahi to play instead of going to war.  The game is still going and there are tournaments for adults and children.

There are seven players on each team. There are two types of Ki-O-Rahi, there is the tackle and the non-tackle. Professional adults play tackle in competitions but normally children just play non-tackle with tags. The game is played on a circular field with no outs, the purpose of the game is to hit the te tupu and to defend it by blocking the other team from hitting it with the ball. There are no positions, but there are rules, no more than five people can enter the circle around the te tupu.

If you didn’t know, there is a legend behind this game, it is a story from back in the olden days. The words used in Ki-O Rahi are connected to the story. The story is about Patupairehe stealing Rahi’s wife Tiarakurapakiwai, then Rahi trys to save her. As soon as Rahi rescued his wife, they decided to make peace and they made up the game Ki-O-Rahi. Pou represents the 7 stars of Matariki. Te Tupu represents the rock where Rahi was trapped, Ara represents the pathway of silver ferns.

The Divers Explanation

Diving is an internationally, recognised sport that includes leaping off a high springboard like a acrobat. Diving is one of the most popular sport in the olympics ever since 1904 with spectators. The competitors possess many of the same characteristic as gymnasts and dancers, including strength, flexibility, kinesthetics judgement and air awareness.

Most diving competitions consist of three disciplines: 1 m and 3 m springboards, and the platform. In platform events, In major diving meets, including the Olympic Games and the World Championships, platform diving is from the 10 meter height.

According to my research, divers are judged by their somersaults, their twists and turn and the amount of splash that is made.

Diving Description

As the diver balanced, his body was taut. The audience waited in anticipation for his dive. The diver perfectly left the platform with a clean entry. As she twisted and turned, he executed his maneuvers with precision. he entered the pool positively with a minimal splash.

Netball.

“What?” I said with a nervous voice. As soon as I heard that we only get 8 minutes a half? I straight away felt nervous. We usually get 10 minutes a quarter, this made me think that I had to try my hardest, like seriously.

The referee blew the whistle and the game began, it was the other teams ball. I quickly leaped in front of my partner as the ball was flying over to her. Instead of catching it, I hit it out of the court. “Shot Annliz” Shouted Mele. It was a nice intercept, but I could have caught it. Well, you guys reading this story should already know where my story is set by now?

We were into the last half, the other team was leading by 1 point just 1 more point and then we will be equal. I looked towards the timer, “3:00 more minutes left” I mumbled to myself. It was our center throw, and the ball landed in my hands, throwing it down to our GS the buzzer went just before we could shoot. “Great” I mumbled. Lost by one 1 point, unlucky. The good thing is that we all had fun playing this team.

Instructions-Instrument

Instrument: Guitar

1. you need a shoe box or box
2. strings
3. pencil for the holes
4. wrapping tube
5. masking Tape

Now cut a hole in the middle of your Shoe box/tissue box. Then cut another hole on the sides for the wrapping tube. Push the wrapping tube through the 2 holes at the side of the box. Then tape the wrapping tube to stable it to the box. Thread six strings across the whole of the box. Use a pencil or a sharp knife to make hole for the string. The strings should be a little bit loose to make some sounds. Attach a strap to your guitar and you are ready to rock!

Explanation- Instrument

When you strum a string of the guitar the string will vibrate and the molecules will move back and forth then it travels to your eardrums and then the electrical signal will go into your brain.

If you drop a stone into the pond the water will move out as the stone drops into the pond. The pond will lift higher than it was before. Like as if you fill a bowl with water and then leave you hand were the height is then put a cup into it and then you’ll see how higher it will be.

Aussie Football League

“Get in line” shout’s my teacher. As we line up to head to the hall for AFL, we were all excited because we haven’t played AFL in a while. The game ‘AFL’ stands for Aussie Football League. It’s a sport that has a two teams on and eighteen on each side.

We have been taught again tips of AFL before we play a game. This Tuesday is our last day with them, I’m hoping that we are going to play a game of Aussie Football League. Thanks to them for their kindness for choosing to come to Point England and a few other schools and sharing their amazing skills with us. We would love to see them again next year!

Stop Bullying

Have you bullies out there ever thought twice before saying or acting? Here at Pt England there is a saying called ‘Stop Think & Do’. To be honest, my opinion about bullies is ugly, that’s why I have a diary.

When you want to say mean things about someone, think twice. Would you like it if they said those nasty things about you? If you feel like hitting someone, go punch your pillow. Don’t just think about yourself. Everyone has feelings, saying one bad thing can take away an innocent life.

Bullies are nothing more than losers, i’m not sure if they've ever heard of a word called ‘kind or nice’ because all they do is the opposite. Getting bullied is hard, but the best thing to do is to count to ten and walk away. Think about those who do love you.

If you think bullying makes you cool? oh well, think twice. It’s not. Just imagine a world without bullies for a second? Stop bullying.

Cold Day Walking To School

Shivering my way down to school, the wind buffeted me from one side to another. I'm already late for school, I didn’t even have time for breakfast. “How can this day get any worse?”.

“Uuugh, ugly goosebumps appearing everywhere on my body” I moan. Making my way out of the front door, my jacket flaps from side to side as my teeth start to chatter.

Road Show Trip

“Hi, please take a seat” said the guy in a scientist uniform. As I walked into the Tamaki hall, I was surprised by all the science projects. It looked really interesting.

We all got turns to use each project, I didn’t get through them all. But my favourite was the piano. You take of your shoes, and instead of using your fingers, you use your feet. It’s just like a piano mat.

I really enjoyed watching the scientist, do the balloon show. We had to block our ears, incase we got deaf. They had two balloons to blow up. The first balloon had carbon dioxide oxygen air in it, the second balloon had helium air in it. The question was, Which one would be louder if they both blew up? First we blew up the first one, it was alright. The second one was defining. It was really cool.

The roadshow trip turned out really fun, I really want to go there again. I really enjoyed the science projects and everything else. If you went there? you’d probably say the same thing.

Sound Explanation

If sound didn't exist, then life would be less fun. We wouldn't be able to listen to music or communicate properly with each other. It would be really boring and difficult. But what is sound?

Well, sound is made by vibration. An object vibrates the air molecules, which vibrates through your ear drum. It then converts into a electitional signal that works through to your brain. Then you will know what sound it is.

There is differences between sound. The more sound waves per second, the higher the pitch will be. The less sound waves a second, the lower the pitch will be.

If you look at a sound wave, the point of a sound wave is called crest or peak, the bottom is called trough. Frequency is sound waves over time and is also known as hertz.

Sound can travel through water, air, solids and anything else that can vibrate. Sound cannot travel through space because there is no air molecules to vibrate. And without vibrate there is no sound.

The Nigerian Girls Article

Breaking News! I have heard in Africa 234 girls were taken by kidnappers. That is so shocking news, isn't it? Nearly a million women marching in the Nigerian Capital with signs that says Bring Our Girls Back. Mothers of the girls were so full with tears, disappointed and so, so upset.

Nothing has brought the girls back. They have not rescued any girls yet. The girls were at the age of 16-18. Parents and other town have joined together to search for their girls. People from other country like USA have also joined to support and search for the girls.

It’s been about a month now that the Nigerian girls have been kidnapped by the local terrorist group, and families are starting to loose hope. The terrorist are wanting some of their group released from prison.

The girls have been getting support from all around the world. Governments from all around the world have been calling for the girls release. Hopefully the parents will get their girls back soon and everything will come out fine.

Echolocation

Bats use echolocation to navigate and locate prey. They emit really high pitched sounds which are inaudible for humans. These sounds locate objects and bounce off them back to the bat's sensitive ears. Then they can identify the objects.

Sonar is short for (SOund Navigation And Ranging), it is a technique using echolocation that uses sound usually underwater. In submarine navigation sonar helps them to navigate or to communicate with or notice objects on or under the water.

There is a boy named Ben Underwood that has been blind ever since he was two years old who uses echolocation to guide himself. Unfortunately he passed away from the very same cancer that took his eyesight some 14 years prior. Ben would play games, climb trees, ride bike, skate and just about anything else not too long after he became blind.

Ben was able to do these things by using echolocation just like bats and marine mammals. He wore fake eyes that really looked realistic. For some reason he clicked with his mouth to send an sound which locates a near object and bounces right off back to his ears, just like dolphins. Then he can identify the objects.

Echolocation is used by bats and marine mammals, in particular dolphins and bats. Echolocation means when a echo is sent out then bounces off an object and comes back right at the bats/dolphins ears.

Animation Plus Paragraph

In the Christmas Holidays, all I did was stay home and watch the Christmas lights on the Christmas tree go off, on, off and on. Instead of my mum putting the Christmas presents under the tree, she hid them away. She knew we would rip a small hole in the wrapper and have a peak, but that would just spoilt the surprise.

The Malaysia Airlines flight 370 disappeared on the 8th of march 2014 and the malaysian air force are still searching from this day forward. Before they even knew that something was going wrong the flight was scheduled to depart from Kuala Lampur, Malaysia and was supposed to land in Beijing but did not show. They tried to see what happened and after hours of searching to try and find it to see where it was it dissapeared off the radar they then thoughtit was lost in the air.

For the last week the air force was searching all around the area where it was supposed to go. Later in the week the search kept continuing until they came to there senses. Everybody that was part of the search team had there own opinions the main scenarios was that the plane had been hijacked, had a pilot error or crashed.

In the search they found that the plane had two people with stolen passports and tried to see if they might have been suspects in to the crime or if they were victims. They did background checks and busted into their homes but did not find any evidence of them being a part of the crimes.

The search still continued and each day they are still uncovering new clues on who hijacked it and where the plane is. They have some clues on who has hijacked it and are now trying to find out why and where.

My thoughts on the Hijack of the plane is ridiculous because where would they hide it and what will they do with it.

Banning Cars in Paris

The French government has made a law that people who own cars can only drive it on certain days. The specific law is that drivers with uneven license plates will drive on one day and drivers with even license plates will drive on the other day.

Basically they made this law to stop the pollution in paris. Because the pollution rates are really high and they want to try and solve it by taking half of the cars of the street. They have tried one day with the new law.

They organised this by putting a meeting together and making advertisements for the residents of paris but most of all for the drivers who own cars. When the law was tested they thought it was a good idea but for some reason they didn’t continue.

Now in Paris the cars are running as usual and maybe the pollution rates. Hopefully if you visit Paris it won’t be polluted and it will be the usual city.

Fiafia night

I walked into the breeze and I could already smell the food and I could already see thousands of people milling all around the courts like there was something going on and there was, FIAFIA NIGHT! There were about 3 and a half thousand people there at Pt England School last Wednesday night because it was Fiafia night and I'm going to tell you all about it.

Pt England school has a Fiafia night every second year. We have Fiafia night because it’s a brilliant celebration and our families really enjoy coming and watching their kids perform at their best! They even said they want it every year!

“Finally” I said nervously to myself as the Niuean group walked to the stairs of the stage. We stood there waiting for jump jam to finish their enthusiastic performance. They left the stage with huge grins on their faces. I walked up with butterflies in my stomach to the top of the stairs. As I walked on the stage I couldn’t really see the crowd, so the butterflies disappeared slowly. I got into it and danced at my best!

So Fiafia night was a huge blast. I think it was my best highlight for this term, because everyone was happy and the audience was proud and enjoyed watching their kids perform.

Weta Article

Weta’s have their ears on their front knees and can feel the vibrations of noises around them. You can tell a male and female weta apart because females have a long ovipositor, which looks a bit like a stinger and they use that to lay it eggs.

Weta are large by insects. Some of the giant weta are enormous and are one of the heaviest insects in the world. The weta is sometimes called the dinosaur of the insect world!

There are five different types of weta- tree weta, cave weta, giant weta, tusked weta and ground weta. Altogether there are over 100 different species of weta.  There is a lot weta surrounded around the whole world.

Weta’s are not dangerous, they can’t kill you or harm you. They are nice insects. They can look scary and big for a insect, but they can’t do anything but disturb you!
